Update on the SASOM-MEDICHEM Joint Congress 2019

As reported in the previous issue of Occupational Health Southern Africa, the Joint Congress of the South African Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM) and the International Scientific Association for Occupational and Environmental Health in the Production and Use of Chemicals (MEDICHEM) will take place from Wednesday 31 July to Saturday 3 August 2019, at the Protea Hotel by Marriott (OR Tambo International Airport), Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. The theme of the SASOM-MEDICHEM Joint Congress 2019 is Control of Substances Hazardous to Health: Old and Emerging Issues, and the scientific programme has been accredited by the South African Medical Association (SAMA) for 26 CEUnits for full attendance (including two ethics points), and by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) for four Credits.

MEDICHEM will hold a half-day pre-Congress workshop on Tuesday 30 July 2019, titled Chemicals: From Environment to Epidemiology, which will be facilitated by two international experts: Dr Tee Guidotti (USA/Canada) – a consultant in occupational and environmental health and medicine, in private practice (post-retirement); and Dr Avi Wiener (Israel) – an occupational medicine practitioner at the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Rambam (Maimonides) Medical Center in Haifa, Israel. The workshop has been accredited by SAMA for four CEUnits, and by SACNASP for 0.5 Credit, and will cover the following topics: introduction to environmental toxicology, toxico-dynamics, carcinogenesis, application of toxicology and epidemiology in the modern work environment, and case studies. As the maximum number of participants is 25, interested parties are encouraged to register and pay the fee ofZAR 1 200 early, to secure a place.

The SASOM-MEDICHEM Joint Congress will also host the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) Officers’ Meeting (the second one of 2019, following the first meeting in Melbourne, Australia, in January).

More information can be obtained from the SASOM website (www.sasom.org), including the Congress announcement, draft scientific programme, registration forms for both the Congress and the MEDICHEM workshop, hotel and transport information, and information on the MEDICHEM Congress Awards, with their respective eligibility criteria. The three categories of the MEDICHEM Congress Awards are (i) The MEDICHEM Prize, (ii) The MEDICHEM Scholarship, and (iii) The MEDICHEM Young Professionals Programme (YPP) Award.

Members in good standing of ICOH, SASOM, MEDICHEM or the other South African sister organisations in occupational health, viz. the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH), the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing Practitioners (SASOHN), and the Mine Medical Professionals Association (MMPA), are eligible for reduced registration fees for full or partial attendance of the SASOM-MEDICHEM Joint Congress, as indicated on the Congress registration form.

An accommodation block booking has been made at the Congress venue, the Protea Hotel by Marriott (OR Tambo International Airport); participants are urged to make their accommodation bookings early to avoid disappointment. Accommodation costs are additional to the Congress registration fees, and participants will need to make their own booking and payment arrangements directly with the hotel.
